So I just bought my son a 1963 Chevy C20 truck. Can I run regular unleaded in that? I'll post pics after it gets delivered. I'm kind of jealous of my kid. I love his new truck. Well it will be better after it has seats.

You can only run unleaded if it has jad hardened valve seats installed. Otherwise you'll need to use a lead additive.

that's kinda what I was figuring. I'll ask the dude when he delivers it.

Get the numbers off of the cylinder heads and post them here. If it is the stock engine then no you can't. If it's a replacement- maybe. It might be a "newer" engine that can run unleaded. If you can't get the numbers there are other things that can help ID it.

In a perfect world you should run additive if it doesn't have hardened valve seats.

In the real world, and considering if it has the original engine it is going to already be at least somewhat worn. if you are just driving it around, you should be fine without lead additive, since you aren't pushing the engine the wear will be minor. If you are working the engine(towing, hauling heavy loads, racing, etc.) you will need the additive to avoid recessing the valve seats.
If Rhode Island is anywhere near you, I have a seat that will fit that in my garage you can have. Needs a new cover but the foam is intact.

Alas, I'm in Wisconsin. It's going to be driven by a 17 yr old. Hopefully he doesn't push it too hard. I figure if he does a lot of the work on it he'll baby it. (Am I delusional?)

Gotcha. I would bet that you cannot run regular unleaded in that.

Also, none of my business but I would not allow anybody I care about to drive a vehicle with 50 year old single pot brakes.

Noted. Haven't decided what all is getting changed yet. Like obviously we're going to replace the milk crate with a seat. Feel free to suggest upgrades.

I would hit safety and drive ability stuff first. The big two:

1.) Do a dual circuit power disc brake swap on the front end. The parts are not TOO expensive and stuff like brackets and spindles can be found used. This is paramount to your safety driving around on today's roads. Check the condition of the lines, replace them all if you can afford it. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use a compression fitting to join two sections of line together.

2.) Seats can be buckets or bench. Whichever you prefer. Make sure you have at least lap belts in there.

This truck looks pretty solid and it's great you are working on it as a family!

Replacing the whole brake system sounds like a good idea. The windshield is cracked but found one already. The guy we bought it from thinks he has a bench seat that will fit. Someone had changed it from three on the tree to floor shift so we're switching that back. Planning on running new wiring. Mirrors. Figure we'll work in safety and drive ability stuff before we start swapping out fenders, etc. came with replacement fenders. It is pretty solid. Plus we have to teach the kid how to drive a stick.

This just seemed like so much more fun than an old corolla or something. I'm excited to spend time with him working on it.

Some of the best times of my life were/are wrenching with my dad and brother! It's cool to share a common interest.

I forgot to mention that if you do an oil change the only off-the-shelf oil you can run will be Valvoline VR1 10W30 or 20W50. The rest are no bueno for your flat tappet cam. You can run other stuff but you will need a bottle of additive that can be hard to find locally- you'd probably have to order it.

I've never worked on anything this old before. Hubby and I are kinda using this as practice before we start working on our triumph. About the oldest thing I've worked on was the T/A I used to have. I'm hoping that he enjoys doing this with us.
